01 May 3 Things to Know About the Texas Standard Possession Order for May 2020
So it’s May 2020, let’s review the applicable weekend and weekday visitations under the Texas Standard Possession Order:
- The non-custodial parent (the parent exercising visitation in the standard possession order) will have the child(ren) on weekends beginning on Friday the 1st, 15th, and 29th (5th Friday of the month) this month. Note: since there is a 5th Friday this month, the non-custodial parent will get back to back weekends since the following Friday will be the 1st Friday of June.
- If the non-custodial parent is Mom, this month you will have the weekends above AND the weekend of 8th if your order has standard language for Mother’s Day. Remember to check your order because I have seen a lot of variations in the Mother’s/Father’s day language in orders or decrees. Some give just the day, while others award the entire weekend.
- The non-custodial parent with standard visitation will get all the Thursdays (Wednesdays in older orders) this month unless the child(ren) are dismissed for summer vacation this month. Remember, once summer starts, the weekday visits disappear in the Texas Standard Possession Order while the weekends continue throughout the summer.
Now that I look at it, this is an interesting 6 weeks if you are the non-custodial mother of a child and have standard possession. The mother will get the weekends of May 1, 8, 15, 29, and 5th of June. That is every weekend with the exception of the 22nd of May. Interesting. Happy Mother’s Day!
One final note about COVID-19. Watch my video about the rules during the pandemic in terms of the possession or visitation orders in Texas. If you are in another county, check with a local attorney to see what your county’s position is.
Remember, this discussion assumes that you have a standard possession order in Texas. Your language may vary in your decree or order. Read your order. If you have any questions or are not sure what to do, contact a local attorney to help you.
Come back at the end of May and we will discuss what will happen in June.
As always, keep it simple…
